Hey everyone, Kyle Ray here—drummer, music lover, and now blogger it seems. I’ve got a story to share from a night that’s still ringing in my ears and warming my soul. On March 23, 2025 , I had the absolute privilege of playing drums with the incredible Jeremiah Johnson at The Rose in Golden, Colorado. It was all part of the Colorado Blues Society’s 30th Anniversary and Award Ceremony—a milestone celebration for a community that’s kept the blues alive and thriving out here in the Rockies. And let me tell you, it was a night to remember.

The gig itself was electric. Jeremiah Johnson, the St. Louis blues powerhouse signed to Ruf Records, brought his signature grit and soul to the stage, and I was right there behind the kit, laying down the heartbeat for every searing guitar lick and soulful wail. The Rose was packed with blues fans, society members, and folks who just knew they were in for something special. The energy in that room—it’s hard to describe unless you’ve felt it. It was like the music was a living thing, bouncing off the walls and pulling everyone in. We played our hearts out, and the crowd gave it right back to us. I’ll never forget the way they roared after Jeremiah’s last note faded out. That’s the kind of night that reminds you why you do this.

What made it even sweeter was the day leading up to the show. We had a rare day off in Golden, and I took full advantage. If you haven’t been to Golden, picture this: a charming little mountain town nestled against the foothills, with Clear Creek running through it and the Coors Brewery looming in the background. I spent the day wandering the streets, soaking in the crisp Colorado air, and just vibing with the laid-back energy of the place. Grabbed a coffee, popped into a couple of shops, and maybe even treated myself to a cold one (it’s Golden—how could I not?). It was the perfect way to recharge before hitting the stage that night.

But here’s the bittersweet part: this show felt like a high point on what’s starting to feel like a farewell tour with Jeremiah. He’s decided to hang up his touring boots after our next few weekends on the road—Indianapolis, Ohio, and Texas are still ahead of us. After that, it’s time to say goodbye to this chapter. I’ve been so grateful to share the stage with him, to lock in that groove night after night and watch him connect with crowds all over the country. He’s a true bluesman, and I’ve learned so much from playing with him. It’s not goodbye forever—just to the road life for him—but it still feels big, you know?

So, this night at The Rose? It was more than just a gig. It was a celebration of 30 years of blues in Colorado, a killer set with Jeremiah, and a moment to soak in where we’ve been and where we’re going. I’m excited for what’s next—new beats, new projects, new adventures—but I’ll carry this one with me for a long time.

Thanks to the Colorado Blues Society for having us, to The Rose for being an awesome venue, and to all of you who keep showing up for live music. Here’s to the blues, to Golden, and to the next chapter—whatever it may bring.

Keep the rhythm alive,

Kyle Ray
